Escribà chocolate shop
Just around the corner from La Boqueria market, Escribà is a chocolate lover’s Mecca. The shop is still fronted with its attractive 1909 Modernista façade, but its the contents in the windows which stand out most.
Antoni Escribà took the business over from his father and turned chocolate making almost into a work of art. He once described himself as the Che Guevara of chocolate making. I’m not sure what he meant by this, but he was certainly respected by many great artists including Dalí, Miró and Picasso, who ordered every year his hand painted Easter eggs. The latter famously sent back a painting in payment for an egg he had commissioned of Barcelona’s Columbus monument.
Note the signed photograph of Almodóvar in the window.
Note also the giving of Easter eggs in Catalonia has a long tradition, but here it is the godparents who buy the gift.
