Barcelona’s air defences during the Civil War
.

Air defences during the Civil War. The gun emplacements were built here on El Turó de Rovira (267m) in 1937 to protect the city from air raids. They were equipped with between tow and seven 105mm Vickers guns but did not enjoy a great success. The Council has announced that the ruins are to be protected.

The gun emplacements were occupied by shanty dwellings in the 1940s. The excellent documentary Barraques pays tribute to the people who lived here for decades. Ignored by the authorities, they had trek every day down the hill to fetch water. All that remains are a few tiles, though a number of renovated shacks still exist on the hill.
