Ampurdan – inland and context
This guide focuses on the region called L’Empordà in Catalan (through barely parted lips), El Ampurdán in Spanish (open your mouth wide), and the Ampurdan in English. It is part of the province of Girona, but the locals are much more interested in their immediate comarca, roughly translatable as county in English. I lived and worked in Figueres, the capital of l’Alt Empordà (Upper Ampurdan), from September 1988 to June 1991, and in Torroella de Montgrí and Bellcaire d’Empordà, both in El Baix Empordà (Lower Ampurdan), from June 1991 to September 1992. I developed an immense admiration for the region, and return there as often as I can.
