Aberri Eguna is the Basque national day, and is celebrated on Easter Sunday. The practice was introduced by the founding father of Basque nationalism, the xenophobic Sabino Arana in the late 19th century. It supposedly commemorates the day on which he hit upon the idea of Basque nationalism while ill in bed, though it was not held officially by his party, the PNV until 27th March 1932. Although adopted as the national day by all nationalist and left-wing parties during the dictatorship, the divisive political atmosphere that today is Euskadi has led it to only being celebrated by nationalist parties.
