In the final years of the Franco regime, the Guerrilleros de Cristo Rey (the Warriors of Christ the King) was the largest of the extreme right-wing groups dedicated to small-scale terrorism. The group’s acts were often carried out with the knowledge, tolerance and at times connivance of sections of the Spanish police, and included beatings, throwing smoke bombs and attacks on universities, bookshops and churches where people had sought refuge from the police.
