Madrid bombings (11M)
maqueto (maketo in Basque)
An extremely offensive word used in the Basque Country for an immigrant worker from the rest of Spain. Maketo means stupid in Basque and it was possibly first used to describe people who didn’t understand the language. Mateko was common in late 19th century racist political language when hundreds of thousands of workers from the rest of Spain came to work in the factories of the Basque Country, which was undergoing an industrial revolution. As is often the case it may well have lost much of its offensiveness today.
