Albons
Albons, which some claim is the home of the albondiga [meatball], can be approached from several directions, including a pleasant back road from l’Escala. The castle, built by Count Ponç-Hug IV of Empuriés in the 13th century, is interesting and the two local restaurants are more than OK. The municipal swimming pool is a source of great envy for neighbouring villages. Albons holds a locally famous annual rice cooking competition. One of the silliest demonstrations I have ever witnessed was held here in 1991, when terribly serious teenagers pestered their long suffering mothers with placards saying “No volem paella espanyola, volem arros català!”
