La Bisbal d’Empordà
La Bisbal d’Empordà, the capital of El Baix Empordà, is a bustling market town in an attractive river setting. The quality of this town’s mud has meant that la Bisbal has specialized in the production of ceramics since the seventeenth century, and pottery shops line the main road. The streets of the old quarter lead to the Plaça Major, the erstwhile parade grounds of the 11th century Episcopal palace, considered one of the most important examples of the Catalan civil Romanesque style. The old centre retains several impressive mansions and the architectural remains of a once thriving Jewish quarter. There are three or four surprisingly nice café-bars on the riverside drive diagonally across main strip from the old town.
