The Gaverres Mountains

The Gaverres Mountains to the south and west of La Bisbal are heavily forested. It is this large Mediterranean oak forest which gives the massif its special value. The forest cover is only rarely broken by occasional farmhouses or small hamlets. There are several mediaeval fortresses and religious buildings, and also lime kilns, mills, coal stores, ice-storage wells and other constructions resulting from exploitation of natural resources, but the most interesting human monuments are the dolmen of la Cova d’en Daina and the menhir of la Murtra, both near Romanyà de Selva in the Vall d’Aro. As the official guide says, “the strong pressure of tourist activity from the Costa Brava has unfortunately had a noticeable effect in some sectors where various urban developments of dubious aesthetic quality distort the homogeneity of the landscape and adversely affect the environment”, and the most remote parts are, sadly, directly under the main flight path for Girona airport. A group of young people in La Bisbal organise an annual summer night walk or Camina Nocturna through Les Gavarres, which is highly recommended.
