4. Besalú to Girona
The triangle formed by a line from Besalú to Girona and the borders of the Pla d’Estany is exceptionally fertile land, and is very much in demand with well-to-do Barcelonians looking for a summer or weekend retreat. The entire area of soft rolling hills is full of neat little hamlets with a rich patrimony of medieval monuments. One recommended circular route full of Romanesque churches and fine masias starts in Martís, then on to Crespià, Esponellà, Orfes, Galliners, Vilavenut, completing the circle at Fontcoberta. This route will take you past some good restaurants: Esponellà’s Can Roca, which earned a fork in the Michelin Red guide, offers a reasonable set- priced midday menu, although it is more expensive at night. (Esponellà is also home to the adventure holiday organization called Fang, who offer routes with mountain bike, river kayaking, archery, paintball, canyon descents, and “light” survival classes). Serinyà has a Romanesque church and medieval fortifications, but is best known for its prehistoric cave paintings.
