A minute sea anemone has been named the world’s most northerly species in a paper in
Polar Biology after being discovered directly below the ancient ice of the north pole. The anemone (
Bathyphellia margaritacea) which is also found further south was discovered by Russian explorers during a 2007 submersible voyage. This is the first living thing to be formally identified in the waters directly below the pole, which have been hidden by a layer of permanent ice for more than 800,000 years.
