Snakes in Jordan

There are 37 species of snakes, of which 6 or 7 of which are venomous, depending on the source. The Palestine viper (Viperae palaestinae -shown above -Wikipedia) is the commeonest and most poisonous snake in the country, and is a leading cause of snakebite within its range.

There are three black snakes in Jordan; one of them is not poisonous, while the other two are extremely dangerous. They look the same and could be wrongly identified. As a rule of thumb, when you see a black snake in Jordan, get away from it as quickly as possible. More here

The snakes of southern Jordan are studied on the basis of recent collections (1990-1993). A total of 24 snake species belonging to five families are included.


Viper bites are common in Jordan, as in other parts of the world. There are six types of poisonous snakes in Jordan.14
