Tortoises, terrapins and turtles in Tanzania

The commonest tortoise in Tanzania is the Leopard tortoise, which is often seen plodding along game reserve roads in the country (above photo by Swati Sani).
Four species of terrapin are also present, the largest being the Nile soft-shelled terrapin which can reach lengths of up to 1 metre.
