Winston Churchill on Barcelona

Barcelona was the first city in the world to be inflicted with mass aerial bombing. Winston Churchill said to the House of Commons at the start of the Blitz.
“I do not want to undervalue the severity of the damage falling on you, but I trust our citizens will be capable of resisting as bravely as the valient people of Barcelona.”)
In all 2700 were killed in Barcelona by the bombs.

Barcelona’s pigeon problem

Barcelona is failing to reduce its superpopulation of 256,000 pigeons in the city. Hordes of elderly protectors feeding them bread have ensured that despite large figuers being spent on their erradiction, the number of pigeons has increased from 180,000 in 1991. There is currently no city bylaw against feeding them.

City of restaurants

Barcelona is the only non-French city to receive the prestigious Gourmande award. The city is home to some 10,000 restaurants and nine Michelin stars. In this brief interview in The Guardian, Ferran Adrià recommends his favourite places to eat.

“There are a great deal of mediocre restaurants selling exceptionally mediocre food especially in the tourist belt around the Ramblas. Avoid it. But elsewhere in Barcelona is good because there are new places opening up all the time and there’s loads of enthusiasm there.”

Ranking of Barcelona university

The University of Barcelona has been ranked 167th university in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2008. But the UB, instead of glorying in being the only university in Spain cited in the top 200, should be ashamed that they are so low on the list. At a national level, the institution excels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Barcelona is to have 500 free WiFi points in municipal facilities (museums, civic centres, sports centres, etc) by 2010. There are currently only 50 free points.
